Quick Concrete Solutions
My concrete is cracking after only a short period. Is there something wrong with it, and can it be repaired?
All concrete cracks. It has to crack because it contracts during the drying, curing, and hardening process, and the bond between the cement paste and the aggregates is not strong enough to withstand that stress. In fact, concrete is an incredibly dense material—according to This Old House, it weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot—which means even small amounts of shrinkage can create significant internal stress that leads to cracking. The best way to prevent unsightly cracking is to put joints in your concrete at regular intervals. A good formula is to measure the depth of your structure and multiply the number by three. Use this number to determine the approximate number of feet between joints. (For example, a 4-inch slab of concrete should have joints every 10 to 12 feet.) Uneven shifting of the substructure or subgrade can also cause cracking. This is a structural failure, as opposed to improper curing or jointing as mentioned above. Before repairing any concrete cracking, determine the source of the cracking and remedy that first. Epoxy grout is an excellent crack repair agent. Small concrete projects, like driveways, should take two to three days. More extensive projects such as parking lots, industrial warehouse floors, bike trails, and commercial sidewalks around a property may take a week or two. Contact our concrete contractors to obtain a specific estimation. Are concrete and cement the same thing?
Concrete and cement are not the same, although many people use the terms interchangeably. Cement is used to make concrete; it is mixed with water and other materials and becomes concrete once it hardens. Contact our concrete contractors to get started with your next project today. What is slump used for?
Slump is the amount of water in the concrete mix, which shows the mix's consistency. The lower the slump, the dryer the mix will be. If water is added to the mix beyond what is specified, it can result in reduced strength and the possibility that the surface will deteriorate. Our concrete contractors will proudly help you receive appropriately mixed concrete that contains just the right amount of water. Is it necessary to remove topsoil before pouring concrete?
Topsoil does need to be removed before concrete is placed. Topsoil and other organic materials are too unstable to support slabs of concrete. The subgrade of cement should contain no organic material. According to our team of concrete contractors, this is very important for having a quality slab. How long does a concrete driveway need to cure?
The recommended time for a concrete driveway to cure can be anywhere from three to seven days, depending on the load. Ask our team of concrete contractors for specific directions on when your driveway will be back in service. Why is curing important for concrete?
Curing keeps your concrete at the appropriate moisture content. If this is not done correctly, it can reduce the strength of your concrete by a large percentage. Proper curing also keeps your concrete from cracking and shrinking. Our concrete contractors are experienced in this task and can ensure satisfactory results for every step of the process. What are the benefits of a concrete patio compared to a paver patio?
You've probably seen a couple of concrete patios or driveways before. Many public examples could be basketball courts or the floors of outdoor pavilions. The benefits of a concrete patio are that they are less expensive to create, easy to install, and relatively easy to keep in good shape over a long period of time.
